דָּבָר שֶׁאִי אֶפְשָׁר כְּלָל לְאָכְלוֹ בְּלִי הֲדָחָה, אָסוּר לַהֲדִיחוֹ בַּשַׁבָּת אֲפִלּוּ בְּצוֹנֵן. וְדָג מָלוּחַ (הערינג) מֻתָּר לִשְׁרוֹתוֹ בְּמַיִם צוֹנְנִים, לְפִי שֶׁגַּם קֹדֶם הַשְּׁרִיָּה רָאוּי לַאֲכִילָה.

Food that cannot be eaten at all without being rinsed, is forbidden to be rinsed on Shabbos, even with cold water.²⁸This is the opinion of the Peri Megadim and Nishmas Adam. But Mishnah Berurah 318: 37 rules according to Beis Yosef, Perisha, Eliyahu Rabbah, Levush, etc., that you are allowed to make it edible by rinsing it with cold water, for there is no prohibition of makeh bepatish (applying the finishing touches) regarding food. Salted fish [herring] may be soaked in cold water for even before soaking, it is edible.
