בְּהֵמוֹת, חַיּוֹת וְעוֹפוֹת הַגְּדֵלִים בַּבַּיִת, שֶׁמְּזוֹנוֹתֵיהֶן מוּטָלִין עָלֶיךָ, מֻתָּר לָתֵת לָהֶם מְזוֹנוֹת בַּשַׁבָּת. אֲבָל אוֹתָן שֶׁאֵינָן גְּדֵלִים בַּבַּיִת וְאֵין מְזוֹנוֹתֵיהֶן עָלֶיךָ, אָסוּר לִטְרוֹחַ בִּשְׁבִיל לִתֵּן לָהֶם מְזוֹנוֹת. וַאֲפִלּוּ לְהַשְׁלִיךְ לִפְנֵיהֶם, אָסוּר. וְלָכֵן אָסוּר לִתֵּן מְזוֹנוֹת לִפְנֵי הַיּוֹנִים, לְפִי שֶׁיּוֹצְאִין וְאוֹכְלִין בַּשָּׂדֶה. נוֹתְנִין מְזוֹנוֹת לִפְנֵי כֶּלֶב. וַאֲפִלּוּ שֶׁל הֶפְקֵר, יֵשׁ קְצָת מִצְוָה לִתֵּן לוֹ מְעַט מְזוֹנוֹת, שֶׁהֲרֵי הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא חַס עָלָיו עַל שֶׁמְּזוֹנוֹתָיו מוּעָטִין, וּמַשְׁהֶה אֲכִילָתוֹ בְּמֵעָיו שְׁלשָׁה יָמִים. יֵשׁ נוֹהֲגִין לָתֵת חִטִּים לִפְנֵי הָעוֹפוֹת בְּשַׁבָּת שִׁירָה, וְאֵינוֹ נָכוֹן, שֶׁהֲרֵי אֵין מְזוֹנוֹתֵיהֶן עָלֶיךָ (שכ"ד).

Animals [such as cattle,] beasts, and poultry that are raised in the house and whose feeding is your responsibility, may be fed on Shabbos.³⁶You may also feed another’s animal, provided they have an owner. [Tehilah Ledavid] But, it is forbidden to trouble yourself in order to feed those not raised in the house and whose feeding is not your responsibility.³⁷However, if you know that the animal is hungry you may feed it regardless of ownership because it is written וְרַחֲמָיו עַל כָּל מַעֲשָׂיו (“He is compassionate to all His creatures”). [Aruch Hashulchan 324: 2] Even [just] to throw feed before them is forbidden. Therefore, it is forbidden to place food before doves³⁸Even if they are yours. because they can fly out and get their food in the fields. You may place food before a dog. Even if it has no owner, there is somewhat of a mitzvah to give it some food, because the Holy One, blessed is He, showed it compassion; for, because of the scarcity of its food, He caused its food to remain undigested in its intestines for three days.³⁹Magein Avraham. Some are accustomed to place wheat before the birds on Shabbos Shirah,⁴⁰The Shabbos when Parashas Beshalach is read. but this is not proper, because it is not our responsibility to feed them.
