עוֹפוֹת שֶׁהֵם בְּבֵיתוֹ אוֹ בֶּחָצֵר הָעוֹמְדִים לַאֲכִילָה, וְהֵם כְּבָר הֻרְגְּלוּ בַּבַּיִת, שֶׁאֲפִלּוּ יוֹצְאִין לַחוּץ בָּאִים לָעֶרֶב לְבֵיתוֹ, מֻתָּר לְצוּדָן אֲפִלּוּ חוּץ לֶחָצֵר לְצֹרֶךְ יוֹם טוֹב לְשָׁחֳטָן. אֲבָל שֶׁלֹּא לְצֹרֶךְ אֲכִילָה, אָסוּר לְצוּדָן. וְאִם הֵם חֲדָשִׁים שֶׁלֹּא הֻרְגְּלוּ, אָסוּר לְצוּדָן אֲפִלּוּ לְצֹרֶךְ אֲכִילָה, אֲפִלּוּ כְּשֶׁהֵן בְּבֵיתוֹ. אַךְ בַּלַּיְלָה כְּשֶׁהֵן יוֹשְׁבִין, מֻתָּר לְקַחְתָּן. וּבְכָל עִנְיָן יֵשׁ לִזָּהֵר שֶׁיִּבְרוֹר מֵעֶרֶב יוֹם טוֹב אֵיזֶה שֶׁהוּא רוֹצֶה לִשְׁחֹט בְּיוֹם טוֹב, כִּי שֶׁמָּא זֶה שֶׁיִּטוֹל יִמָּצֵא כָּחוּשׁ, וְנִמְצָא שֶׁטִּלְטֵל שֶׁלֹּא לְצֹרֶךְ. וְעוֹפוֹת שֶׁאֵינָן עוֹמְדִין לַאֲכִילָה אֶלָּא לְבֵיצִים, הֵן מֻקְצִים.

Domesticated poultry that is kept in the house or in the yard for food, are permitted to be caught⁴²Even with a trap. (Mishnah Berurah 497:17, poskim) so that you may slaughter them for your Yom Tov needs. But if not needed for food, it is forbidden to catch them.⁴³Magein Avraham 497:8. And if they are new and not accustomed to (the house or yard), it is forbidden to catch them even for food, even while they are in the house.⁴⁴Unless they enter a very narrow space. (Mishnah Berurah 497:17) But at night, when they are roosting, it is permitted to take them.⁴⁵Chayei Adam 88:2. In any event, you must be careful to select those you intend to slaughter on Yom Tov before Yom Tov, lest the one you will take will prove to be too lean and you will have handled it needlessly.⁴⁶This is a needless bother on Yom Tov. (Mishnah Berurah 497:18) Also if you catch it in an open space, it is considered a melachah of catching, without valid purpose. (Sha’ar Hatziyun 497:40) Poultry, not kept for food, but for laying eggs, are muktzeh.⁴⁷Mishnah Berurah 497:16.
