סימן קצח סעיף ט

בִּזְמַן הַזֶּה מִסְּתָמָא כָּל אִישׁ יִשְֹרָאֵל לָמַד מִקְרָא וּמִשְׁנָה. וְלָכֵן כְּשֶׁמֵּת, מְבַטְלִין אֲפִלוּ תַלְמוּד תּוֹרָה כְדֵי לְלַוּוֹת אוֹתוֹ. אַךְ לְאִשָּׁה אוֹ לְתִינוֹק, נוֹהֲגִין לְהָקֵל, שֶׁלֹּא לְבַטֵּל תַּלְמוּד תּוֹרָה בִּשְׁבִיל הַלְוָיָה. וְתִינוֹקוֹת שֶל בֵּית רַבָּן, לְעוֹלָם אֵין מְבַטְּלִין כְּלָל, דַּאֲפִלּוּ לְבִנְיַן בֵּית הַמִּקְדָּשׁ אֵין מְבַטְּלִין אוֹתָם.

Nowadays, it is assumed that every Jew has studied [some] Scripture and some Mishnah. Therefore, when he dies, even the study of Torah must be interrupted in order to participate in his funeral procession. However, for a woman or a child, the custom is to be lenient, and not to interrupt Torah study in order to attend their funeral. School children, should never be interrupted from Torah study. Even for the purpose of building the Beis Hamikdash, they must not be interrupted.
