סימן מ סעיף ג

כְּלִי שֶׁאֵינוֹ יָכוֹל לַעֲמֹד אֶלָּא עַל יְדֵי סְמִיכָה, אִם מִתְּחִלָּתוֹ נַעֲשָֹה כָּךְ לְהִשְׁתַּמֵּשׁ בּוֹ עַל יְדֵי סְמִיכָה יֵשׁ לוֹ דִּין כְּלִי. אֲבָל אִם לֹא נַעֲשָֹה לְהִשְׁתַּמֵּשׁ בּוֹ כָּךְ, כְּגוֹן, כִּסּוּי כְּלִי, אֵין נוֹטְלִין מִמֶּנּוּ. וְיֵשׁ בָּזֶה כַּמָּה חִלּוּקֵי דִּינִים בְּשֻׁלְחָן עָרוּךְ.

A vessel that cannot stand without support—if it was originally made to be used by means of this support, it is considered an halachic utensil. But if it was not made to be used this way, for example, the cover of a vessel, you should not wash with it. There are many halachic details on this issue discussed in the Shulchan Aruch.
