סימן ס סעיף ב
עַל הַזִּיקִים, וְהוּא כּוֹכָב הַיּוֹרֶה כַּחֵץ בְּאֹרֶךְ הַשָּׁמַיִם מִמָּקוֹם לְמָקוֹם, וְנִמְשָׁךְ אוֹרוֹ כְּשֵׁבֶט, וְעַל הַכּוֹכָב שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ זָנָב וְשֵׁבֶט שֶׁל אוֹרָה, וְעַל רְעִידַת הָאָרֶץ, וְעַל רוּחוֹת שֶׁנָּשְׁבוּ בְּזַעַף, וְעַל הַבְּרָקִים, עַל כָּל אַחַת מֵאֵלּוּ מְבָרֵךְ, בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה ה' אֱלֹקֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם עוֹשֶׂה מַעֲשֵׂה בְּרֵאשִׁית. (וְאֵינוֹ מְבָרֵךְ עַל הַזִּיקִים, כִּי אִם פַּעַם אַחַת בַּלַּיְלָה, אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁרָאָה עוֹד כּוֹכָב אַחֵר רָץ. וְעַל הַכּוֹכָב שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ זָנָב, כֵּיוָן שֶׁבֵּרַךְ עָלָיו, אֵינוֹ מְבָרֵךְ עוֹד, אֶלָּא כְּשֶׁלֹּא רָאָהוּ עַד לְאַחַר שְׁלֹשִׁים יוֹם). וְעַל הָרַעַם, אִם שָׁמְעוּ לְאַחַר שֶׁעָבַר הַבָּרָק מְבָרֵךְ, בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה ה' אֱלֹקֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם שֶׁכֹּחוֹ וּגְבוּרָתוֹ מָלֵא עוֹלָם. וְאִם רָאָה אֶת הַבָּרָק וְשָׁמַע אֶת הָרַעַם בְּיַחַד, מְבָרֵךְ רַק בְּרָכָה אַחַת, עוֹשֶׂה מַעֲשֶׂה בְּרֵאשִׁית. וְכֵן אִם בֵּרַךְ עַל הַבָּרָק עושֵׁה מַעֲשֵׂה בְּרֵאשִׁית, וּבְתוֹךְ כְּדֵי דִבּוּר לְהַבָּרָק נִשְׁמַע הָרַעַם, אֵינוֹ צָרִיךְ לְבָרֵךְ עָלָיו, כִּי נִפְטַר בַּבְּרָכָה שֶׁעַל הַבָּרָק. אֵין מְבָרְכִין עַל הַבָּרָק אוֹ עַל הָרַעַם אֶלָּא תּוֹךְ כְּדֵי דִּבּוּר. אֲבָל אִם הִפְסִיק יוֹתֵר, שׁוּב לֹא יְבָרֵךְ.
When you see a meteoric shower, that is shooting stars flashing across the sky from one place to another in a brilliant streak, or when seeing a comet that has a bright tail streaming behind it, or on witnessing an earthquake, or a hurricane, or lightning, on each of these, you say the berachah Baruch ata Adonoy Elokeinu melech ha'olam osei ma'asei vereishis, [Blessed are You, Hashem, our God, King of the universe, Who makes the work of Creation.] (The berachah over a meteor, should be said no more than once during the night, even if you saw another meteoric shower. Once you said the berachah over a comet, you should not repeat it when you see it again within thirty days.) On hearing thunder after the lightning has flashed,2You should say this berachah if you heard thunder even without seeing any lightning. Afterwards, if you see lightning, you should then say osei ma’asei vereishis. (Mishnah Berurah 227: 5) you say: Baruch ata Adonoy, Elokeinu melech ha'olam shekocho ugevuraso malei olam, [Blessed are You, Hashem, our God, King of the universe, for His strength and His power fill the universe]. If you see lightning and hear thunder at the same time, you say only the berachah, Osei ma'asei vereishis. If on seeing lightning, you said the berachah Osei ma'asei vereishis and immediately after the lighting, you hear thunder, you must not say the berachah over [the thunder] for the berachah over the lightning exempts it. The berachah over lightning and thunder should be said the moment they occur,3Actually, within a toch kedei dibbur, the time it takes to say the three words shalom alecha rebbi, “greetings to you, master.” (Yoreh Dei’ah Ch. 210) but if there is a brief interruption, the berachah should not be said any more.
