סימן עג סעיף ח

בְּבֵיתוֹ שֶׁל יִשְֹרָאֵל, אָסוּר לְהַנִּיחַ לְאֵינוֹ יְהוּדִי שֶׁיַּעֲשֶׂה מְלָאכָה בְּשׁוּם אֹפֶן. וַאֲפִלּוּ מְשָׁרֵת אֵינוֹ יְהוּדִי שֶׁרוֹצֶה לַעֲשׂוֹת מְלָאכָה בִּשְׁבִיל עַצְמוֹ צְרִיכִין לִמְחוֹת בּוֹ (רנב שה).

It is forbidden to allow a non-Jew to do a melachah¹⁹Melachah, here refers to the categories of work that are forbidden on Shabbos. under any circumstances in the house of a Jew. Even if a non-Jewish servant wants to do a melachah for himself [in your house],²⁰People may think that he is doing it for you. See footnote 7. The Da’as Torah 244: 3 permits it. you must protest his doing so.²¹If a non-Jew visits your house and does a melachah for you with his own utensils [e.g., he turns on his own flashlight] without your asking him to do so, you need not protest. However, you may not derive benefit from it lest you ask him to do it [Shulchan Aruch Harav 252].
