סימן צח סעיף כט

אָסוּר לְהַסִּיק כְּדֵי לְחַמֵּם אֶת הַבַּיִת, אֶלָּא אִם הַקֹּר גָּדוֹל, שֶׁהַמַּאֲכָלִים נִקְרָשִׁים, וַהֲוֵי צֹרֶךְ אֹכֶל נֶפֶשׁ. אֲבָל אִם אֵין הַקֹּר גָּדוֹל, אָסוּר. רַק עַל יְדֵי אֵינוֹ יְהוּדִי מֻתָּר.

It is forbidden to make a fire in order to heat the house, unless the cold is so severe that the food congeals; then it is considered as required for the preparation of food. But if the cold is not so severe, it is forbidden.⁸⁴The prevailing custom is that even a Jew is permitted to light the furnace, even if just slightly cold. (Rema, Vilna Gaon, Mishnah Berurah 511:7) If done by a non-Jew, it is permitted
