סימן קמא סעיף ח

מְגִלָּה שֶל לַיְלָה, אָסוּר לִקְרוֹת קֹדֶם צֵאת הַכּוֹכָבִים, אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁמִּצְטַעֵר הַרְבֵּה מֵחֲמַת הַתַּעֲנִית. אַךְ יָכוֹל לִטְעֹם קְצָת קֹדֶם הַמְּגִלָּה, כְּגוֹן קַאפֶע וְכַדּוֹמֶה, כְּדֵי לְהִתְחַזֵק מְעַט מֵחֻלְשַׁת הַתַּעֲנִית.

At night it is forbidden to read the Megillah before the stars come out, even if you suffer great discomfort because of the fast. But you may taste something⁵You may eat a kebeitzah of bread or cake, or liquid in the same quantity. (Ibid 692:14) before the reading of the Megillah, such as coffee, and similar beverages, to strengthen yourself from the exhaustion of the fast.
