כְּשֶׁהִיא טוֹבֶלֶת, צְרִיכָה לַעֲמֹד אֶצְלָהּ אִשָּׁה יְהוּדִית גְּדוֹלָה יוֹתֵר מִשְּׁתֵּים עֶשְׂרֵה שָׁנָה וְיוֹם אֶחָד, שֶׁתִּרְאֶה שֶׁלֹּא יִשָּׁאֵר מִשְּׂעַר רֹאשָׁהּ צָף עַל פְּנֵי הַמָּיִם. וְאִם אֵין לָהּ אִשָּׁה, יָכוֹל גַּם בַּעְלָהּ לַעֲמֹד אֶצְלָהּ לִרְאוֹת שֶׁתִּטְבֹּל יָפֶה.

When she immerses herself, she must have in attendance⁴According to the Sidrei Taharah, this is a de’oraisa. Rabbi Akiva Eiger Responsa 114 is undecided if this is a de’oraisa or de’rabonon. a Jewish woman, older than twelve years and one day, to see that none of her hair remains floating on the water.⁵This would totally invalidate her immersion. If there is no woman available, her husband may stand by her to see to it that she immerses properly.⁶If she would prefer, she may loosely wrap her hair in woolen strings or use a loose hair net.
