סימן קסו סעיף ב

בַּיִת, תִּינוֹק, וְאִשָּׁה, אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁאֵין נִחוּשׁ, יֵש סִימָן. פֵּרוּשׁ, שֶׁאִם בָּנָה בַיִת, אוֹ נוֹלַד לוֹ תִינוֹק, אוֹ נָשָׂא אִשָּׁה, אִם הִצְלִיחַ אַחַר כָּךְ שָׁלֹשׁ פְּעָמִים אוֹ לֹא, הוּא סִימָן לוֹ לְהַבָּא, וְיָכוֹל לוֹמַר, בַּיִת זֶה מַצְלִיחַ לִי וְכוּ'. וְכֵן מֻתָּר לִשְׁאֹל לְתִינוֹק, אֵיזֶה פָסוּק לָמַד, וְלִסְמֹךְ עָלָיו לַעֲשׂוֹת מַעֲשֶׂה, דְּחָשִׁיב קְצָת כְּמוֹ נְבוּאָה. יֵשׁ אוֹמְרִים, דְּמֻתָּר לַעֲשׂוֹת לוֹ סִימָן בְּדָבָר שֶׁיָבוֹא לֶעָתִיד, כְּמוֹ שֶׁעָשָׂה אֱלִיעֶזֶר עֶבֶד אַבְרָהָם אוֹ יְהוֹנָתָן בֶּן שָׁאוּל, וְיֵש אוֹסְרִין. וְהַהוֹלֵךְ בְּתֹם וּבוֹטֵחַ בַה', חֶסֶד יְסוֹבְבֶנוּ.

Although no superstition may be practiced through a house, a child, and a woman, they may be regarded as omens. For example, if someone built a house, or had a child born to him, or taken a wife, and afterwards he was successful on three occasions, or was unsuccessful, he may regard this as an omen for the future,²Rashi, Ramah 179:4. However, Rambam and Smag maintain that you can only say these are signs, but you may not base any future plans and actions on them. and say: "This house brings me good luck" etc. It is also permitted to inquire of a child about the verse he studied (that day), and rely on it to do a certain thing, for it is regarded somewhat like a prophecy. Some Poskim³Tur 179. say it is permitted to designate a sign for the future (and to act accordingly): as Eliezer the servant of Abraham,⁴Who used a sign to determine who would be the right girl for Yitzchok to marry. or Yonason the son of Saul; while other Poskim forbid it.⁵Rambam, Smag etc. Eliezer and Yonason were permitted to rely on signs, for they were signs based on logic and reason. (Yeraim, Prisha etc.) However, he who walks in integrity; "And trusts in God, kindness surrounds him."⁶Psalms 32:10.
